ASID MN Showcase Home Tour The Best of the Twin Cities Mpls St Paul Magazine Asid, House tours, Tours

When the doors opened to tour the home this past fall, visitors were asked to vote for their favorite spaces. See the rooms that won attention and be inspired by how local designers brought the homeowners’ vision of a luxurious lakeside retreat to life. You can almost hear the surf when you visit this year’s designer showcase home. Outside, it’s clad in cedar shakes, like a Hamptons beach house built to weather the salty breeze. Inside, the home is all blues and sandy hues, with finishes, textures and accents that evoke driftwood, rope, shells and sea glass.

In the planning stage Root River Hardwoods provided several quotes for different options as that core trio moved towards the final plan. The Laceks’ new home is full of brand-new furniture and accessories, but there are also many mementos of the past. Treasured family photos are incorporated into the design, including a gallery in the sunroom and a huge photo collage mural in the upstairs hall. At the end of the hall is a portrait of the family dogs, one that died while the project was underway and the other a rescue dog they adopted when they were living in Anguilla several years ago. To create those spaces, the Tudor house was gutted and expanded from 4,500 to 6,600 square feet.

“We didn’t have architectural detail to work around,” said Christine Happel of Ethan Allen in Woodbury, who designed Ally’s room with Elsa Dean of Ethan Allen in Edina. A Minneapolis showcase home reflects a family's love of water and casual living. "They said 'We don't like sheet rock. We really love other textures, other architectural features.' So floors, walls and ceilings all have really unique details," McKay said. "Susan had quite extensive house boards and Pinterest boards for the designers," McKay said.

The Laceks had a “very distinct vision” for their home, she said, but relaxation wasn’t the only goal. The couple also hoped to create a place that would be a magnet for their two daughters and their friends. That was the driving force behind moving from their longtime home to another just down the street.

But, as Mpls.St Paul Magazine features editor Emily Sefton noted, every family has some idea of how they want their home to look and conversations are always ongoing. As the Laceks were already planning to renovate, and were currently not living at the home, it was easy for them to agree on the conditions.

But the family’s cold, cellar-like basement and small backyard were less than inviting. The nearest body of water is Lake Harriet, not the ocean, but the home still feels like a coastal vacation spot. That relaxing sand-between-your-toes vibe was very much the goal of homeowners Mark and Susan Lacek. "The goal is to bring awareness to the American Society of Interior Designers," McKay said. "It's a profession organization that promotes the education and knowledge about design and just hopefully people to look for those credentials when they are looking for a designer." McKay said.

St. Paul Magazine's 2014 Fashionopolis event that a house had not been chosen for the 2015 Showcase Tour, they jumped at the chance. And while it may not boast crisp apples and luscious leaves, it is sure to excite and transport you. The 14-foot island creates ample room for cooking prep, while also providing a clear separation between the working aspect of the kitchen and the entertaining area for guests. Hanging chairs and bunk beds maximize functionality in the space, allowing the room to be used for a variety of purposes—from sleepover parties to family game nights. European style and Hamptons influences won over voters when they toured the home this past fall. Again this year, the Showcase Home will feature complimentary audio tours.

During this gorgeous stretch of autumn weather, there are plenty of things to keep you occupied. At the entrance, custom tufted upholstered doors by Interior Workroom “make you excited to see what’s on the other side,” says designer Rob Edman. Framed photos of the homeowners’ dog complement the whimsical wallpaper of dressed-up pooches in the dog’s room. The 13,000-square-foot home by builder John Kraemer & Sons and architect Sharratt Design & Company welcomed visitors to Lake Minnetonka during the tour.

"They have to be willing to do a full kitchen and bath renovation and also be willing to move out." In addition to beachy elements, family is another reoccurring theme as you move through the house. The front porch, designed by Rob Edman and Laura Engen, welcomes guests in with an outdoor fireplace and wicker furniture. It is also one of two rooms that features a blue ceiling, something Susan wanted after learning during their time in the Caribbean that it is believed that blue ceilings ward off evil spirits.

The drama is in the details in the theater room, which features custom columns and wainscoting offset by vibrant red accents. “It really took the space to a whole other level,” says designer Rob Edman. Guests can park at Lord Fletcher’s and take our complimentary 3 minute shuttle to the home. The shuttle will run for the general tour and all special events excluding Culinary Evenings.
